President Biden’s administration seeking to stop manufacturers of lethal counterfeit drugs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released new data reporting more than 109,000 deaths by drug overdose in the 12 months ending January 2023. This is a 0.7 percent increase over the 108,825 deaths of the previous 12 months.
The death toll for drug overdoses in the U.S. first topped 100,000 in 2021 and has become a high priority of President Biden’s administration. Americans were still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a massive influx of lethal drugs on the black market, such as fentanyl, exacerbated an already growing problem.
President Biden’s administration is working to make overdose antidote treatments more widely available. U.S. officials are also trying to hold manufacturers of illegal counterfeit drugs accountable.
